Q&A with Girls Know

Updated: Jun 16, 2023

Originally started as a solo project under a different name, Girls Know came about in 2022. 4 absolute buffoons* met up while attending Western Washington University, and decided it would be funny to make music together. Instead they ended up making the most serendipitous tunes of all time. Currently located in Bellingham, Washington, Girls Know has dreams of world domination, and maybe taking a trip together to Paris. Or maybe even somewhere like Amsterdam.

Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, Girls Knows' music is penetrated deeply by the moody rain that is all too common to the area. Feelings of nostalgia and bittersweet memories are a recurring theme throughout the music. Inspired equally by 2000s Revival Rock, Emo, and Shoegaze, the genres are tied together with catchy pop choruses and soaring guitar leads and solos.

Who are all the band members and what are their roles?

Girls Know currently has 4 people. There’s me (Paul), Jules, Kai, and Rylan. Jules plays the bass, Kai plays drums, Rylan plays lead guitar, and I’m on rhythm guitar and vocals.

Where does the name Girls Know come from?

Girls know girls who know girls who know girls, that will find out what you did.

What are you working on currently? Any plans for an EP or full-length project soon?

We are currently working on finishing up and releasing a lot of our singles that were written before the band even had a name. There’s a lot of things that we really like about them, and we are going to be taking some time soon to really polish that sound and release a more cohesive project, most likely an EP. We’ve come a long way from where we started in terms of our craftsmanship, and we are really eager to show it off soon.

What’s your writing process like?

It typically starts with a chorus that we write with just guitar and vocals. If that ends up being something we like, we record it and generally just produce it up from there. A lot of what we end up putting out contains guitar and instrumentation that we recorded for the demos and left in.

Do you have a favorite song you’ve written? If you do, why is it your favorite?

Well there’s a song we have written that's probably gonna show up on the next EP that I can't really spoil. That's my favorite, but in terms of stuff we’ve released I still really like "Some Words." The guitar tone on that one is definitely a blueprint of sorts. It manages to capture a really rose tinted kind of feel that contrasts ever so delightfully with the subject matter of a failing relationship. It was one of the first songs I ever wrote, and it still holds a special place in my heart.

Who, or what, has most influenced your music and artistic style?

This is a difficult question, because I believe that anything and everything influences artistic style. Even just stuff you hear passing someone on the street. Of course there are more notable and memorable influences, which we knowingly try to pull from and learn from. Julian Casablancas and The Strokes in general are a huge influence on everything we do. The “feel” of our music is definitely different, but the way the guitars are structured and how every instrument interacts with each other is very much based on The Strokes. Apart from that, lyrically, Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys is also someone who I really look up to personally. He’s poetic and in the moment, but also keeps a vagueness and haziness to his lyrics. I especially love the lyrics on "Crying Lightning." Those two bands and the whole “2000s rock revival” movement in general sparked my interest in writing and even playing guitar. The bands general idea is mixing that together with more modern sounds that we find really inspirational.

What are you listening to currently?

Personally I’ve had Feel Something by Movements on constant repeat. Lovely emo record with a lot of wonderfully written songs. The guitar tones on this one are something I’ve been studying for a little while now.

Listen to Girls Know's single "Bliss" now.
